This annual conference is organised by and for postgraduate researchers. The goal of the conference is to showcase PhD research and to encourage cross-disciplinary dialogue between research students. It provides PhD students with a supportive environment in which to develop their communication skills, test their ideas in a constructive dialogue with their peers, meet other researchers and establish contacts within and beyond their area of specialisation.
We cordially invite PhD researchers in any field of social sciences and management to present their research and participate in interdisciplinary discussions. A cash prize will be awarded for the best paper, which will be published on our conference web page. The second and third best papers will also be published on our web page.
Possible topics for papers might include, but are not limited to the following:
- Peace Studies
- Regional Strategic Studies
- Governance, Administration and Leadership
- Challenges to Health in the 21st Century
- Economy and Development
- Business and Management
- Communications and Media
- Education
- Social Policy, Practice and Development
- Tourism and Leisure studies
These topics are interpreted in the broadest sense. Students at the early stages of their PhD are welcome to present papers describing their research area, setting research questions and explaining how they plan to conduct their research.
There is no charge for admission. Limited financial assistance is available for external participants. Six students from outside the University of Bradford will be awarded £50 each to partially cover travel expenses. Please indicate in your proposal if you wish to participate in the competition for these funds.
The conference will be a mix of key-note speeches, student-led sessions and discussion workshops on networking for your career, publishing, research ethics and challenges of interdisciplinary research. Note that the presentation of papers at the conference should be no more than 20 minutes in length. Up to five minutes will be allowed for questions.
To submit a proposal
Please send an abstract (max. 300 words) no later than 7 June 2009 by e-mail to GSconference09@bradford.ac.uk. Electronic submissions (Microsoft Word format or RTF) are preferred. Please attach a separate cover letter with the following information: title of the paper, your full name, university affiliation and the name of your department or school, year of study and contact details (e-mail address, contact address and telephone number). All submissions will be subject to blind peer review, so no personal details should appear in the body of the paper/abstract.
Please note that we cannot accept more than one submission per student.
Applicants will be notified by email if their paper is accepted for the conference by 5 July 2009. Submission of the full paper is optional, but essential if you wish to participate in the “best paper” competition. The deadline for submitting final papers (6000 words max) is August 30, 2009.
