Applications are invited for the 2nd round of the NIHR Fellowship Scheme. Four levels of Fellowship are available.

NIHR Public Health Research programme
The NIHR Public Health Research (PHR) programme invites proposals to evaluate public health interventions. Proposals are expected to provide new knowledge on the benefits, cost-effectiveness, acceptability and wider impacts of non-NHS interventions intended to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities in health.
Expressions of interest can be submitted from 3 November 2008. Outline and full proposals can be submitted from 19 November 2008. The closing date for applications is 21 January 2009, 1pm.

NIHR NHS Physical Environment Research Programme
The NHS Physical Environment Research Programme invites research proposals that will contribute to the built environment and non-clinical services and support emerging National Service Frameworks and ministerial priorities. Proposals are currently encouraged in the following topics: Infection Control, Older People, Space and Design, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, Strategy for the Physical Environment and Decontamination. The closing date for applications is 19 December 2008.

NIHR SDO Programme – Research on generalist services for people at the end of life.
The NIHR SDO programme invites proposals for empirical research on generalist services for people at the end of life and a systematic review of the literature on place of death. It is anticipated that up to three empirical research projects will be commissioned, with funding up to a maximum of £475,000 per project. Funding of up to £100,000 is available for a systematic literature review of one year duration. The closing date for applications is 4 December 2008 at 1.00pm.

NIHR SDO Programme – Technological Innovation Adoption
The NIHR SDO programme invites proposals for an empirical study that will examine specific and contemporary case studies of technology adoption in the NHS. The study is expected to examine the organisational processes on specific aspects of technology adoption and demonstrate how the findings of such research are more generally applicable to other NHS organisations. A maximum of £475,000 funding is available for one project of up to three years duration. The closing date for applications is 11 December 2008 at 1.00pm.

SBRI/NIHR – Health Care Associated Infections
The Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) new Health pilot is a Department of Health and Technology Strategy Board initiative aimed at early stage businesses with technologies to tackle Health Care Associated Infections (HCAI). The HCAI competition is being managed by the NIHR’s i4i Programme. Proposals are invited in two topics:
Hand Hygiene
Pathogen detection in the hospital environment
Projects will be in two phases: Phase 1 is intended to show the technical feasibility of the proposed concept, and will be for a maximum of £100,000 per project. Phase 2 is intended to develop and evaluate prototypes or demonstration units from the more promising technologies, and will be typically in the range £250,000 to £750,000 per project. The deadline for receipt of full applications is Monday 24 November 2008.

Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) programme
As part of the developing NIHR/MRC strategy for health research, the NIHR EME programme invites proposals for 'science driven' studies that:
evaluate clinical efficacy of interventions (where proof of concept in humans has already been achieved);
add significantly to our understanding of biological or behavioural mechanisms and processes;
explore new scientific or clinical principles;
include the development or testing of new methodologies.
The deadline for applications is 1.00pm, Monday 1 December 2008.

Department of Health Policy Research Programme: Evaluation of the Social Enterprise Investment Fund (SEIF)
The Department of Health’s Policy Research Programme invites applications for a two-year research project to evaluate the impact of the SEIF. The evaluation will provide evidence of the extent to which SEIF has aided market entry, increased diversity of provision of health and social care, addressed service gaps, and brought wider benefits to local communities. The evaluation findings will have a practical application to the development of future rounds of the SEIF. The deadline for receipt of full applications is Friday 7 November 2008.

NIHR RCD Research Methods Fellowships and Internships
The NIHR Research Capacity Development (RCD), Research Methods Programme, invites applications from eligible organisations to host Research Methods Fellowships and Internships. Host organisations will receeive funding of salary costs for each Fellowships and Internships to support the development of individuals with expertise in research methods including health statistics, health economics, clinical trial design, and operational research and modelling. The closing date for applications is 17 November 2008 at 1.00pm.

NIHR/DH CSO Healthcare Scientists Research Fellowship competition
The NIHR in collaboration with the Chief Scientific Officer, invites applications for these fellowships, which will help to support individuals wishing to bridge clinical or service careers and research and who have the support of their local NHS and associated university. The Fellowships will provide funding up to a maximum of £115k for a maximum period of 2 years full time (or 3 years at 75% WTE or 4 years at 50% WTE) at either postgraduate or postdoctoral level. The closing date for applications is Monday 1 December 2008 at 13.00.

MRC/NIHR Methodology Research Programme (MRP)
The Medical Research Council (MRC) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) invite proposals to support the development of new and improved systems and theories for health research. Current commissions in the context of the needs-led research strand of the MRP include:
research priorities in complex interventions;
developing decision rules for when NICE should recommend the use of a technology only in the context of an appropriately designed study;
review methods to specify the targeted difference in randomised controlled trials;
identify Methodological research priorities emerging from DH End of Life Care (EoLC) strategy.
The closing date for research proposals is 17 November 2008.

NIHR – Research Capacity Development 2008 recruitment for Clinical Lectureship posts
Clinical Lectureships are available for people who are advanced in their specialty training, have completed a research doctorate or equivalent and show outstanding potential for continuing a career in academic medicine or dentistry. Those who hold a National Training Number (NTN) and a PhD or MD are eligible to apply. Applications can be made between 1 April 2008 and 31 March 2009.

NIHR – Research Capacity Development 2008 recruitment for Dental Academic Clinical Fellowships
Academic Clinical Fellowships in Dentistry are available to dentists in the early stages of specialty training who can demonstrate outstanding potential for development as a clinical academic in research and/or education. The RCD website will direct applicants to the relevant deanery(ies) websites. The deaneries will confirm the availability of posts and agree the deadline for application submission.
